Have you had a chance to stream Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix yet?
This funny series from Tina Fey and Robert Carlock’s stars Ellie Kemper (The Office), Jane Krakowski (30 Rock), Tituss Burgess (Dfwan on 30 Rock) and Carol Kane. My husband and I are in love with this fun, fierce series because of Kimmy’s unbreakable spirit.
Kimmy’s been dealt some harsh blows. She was held underground for 15 years in the Doomsday Cult that she was in and she missed a lot.
For the past 10 years, I’ve been in the midst of pregnancy or baby land, as a mom to a 9 1/2 year old boy, 7 year old girl and 4 and a half year old boy. I’ve changed so many diapers and washed so many bottles, sippy cups and dishes to last a lifetime.
While we aren’t in the baby baby days anymore, when we leave the house with the kids, I’m still carryingdiapers, wipes, snacks, juice boxes, toys.. It’s a lot and frankly, I’m tired. Our youngest has some special needs, so he is still not potty trained and he doesn’t like to hold hands (so we still use a stroller 95%). You can imagine that we don’t get out to restaurants very much or go on many vacations.
Frankly, we’re still very much in survival mode. However, things changed last summer when I went back to work outside the house. Suddenly I got to break out a little and reenter the world. Kind of like how Kimmy re-entered society.
Suddenly I got things like “Time to shower” in the morning and “eating lunch for a full hour long break”. I also got to spend money on clothes — needed to look presentable. It was a different experience.
I like my job — I get to be in meetings and consult with clients. I feel useful and am not taken for granted.
While I worked from 9-6, I had 8-9 AM and 6-7 PM to myself as I commuted back and forth to Manhattan. I read e-books and played “Scramble”. Luckily my husband had a lighter work schedule this summer and he took over a lot of parenting duties. In the fall, our babysitter was able to cover more hours as my husband went to work at a different location for his company. While I like working, it was good to know that things were taken care of at home. It sparked more things in me — like a thirst for time with friends. I had a girls’ weekend getaway with my friends up at Mohonk Mountain House (review here: http://www.themamamaven.com/2015/01/05/weekend-getaway-mohonk-mountain-house-new-paltz-ny/).
While Kimmy Schmidt is content with enjoying NYC right now, perhaps she’ll go on a road trip or proper vacation soon? Re-entering the world isn’t always easy, but totally worth it.
