Recently I got to spend a few days in the Poconos on a trip with the Poconos Mountain Visitors Bureau. We visited two resorts, Silver Birches and Skytop Lodge. This post is part 1 and about Silver Birches. Traveling in the Poconos (Part 1): Silver Birches Resort Visit
We started out our trip at Poconos Action Sports. Lake Wallenpaupack was so peaceful and while we arrived too late to go out on a boat, I’ll definitely come back next time.
We drove right down the road to Silver Birches Resort. This vintage-style resort is utterly charming, with a very attentive staff, and cute guest rooms. The bathrooms were absolutely spotless and looked brand new – everything was revamped last year. Lake Wallenpaupack, which is the third largest lake in Pennsylvania, is man-made and was created in 1927. Silver Birches was opened in 1929, originally as a fourteen room inn by the George and Rachel Singer. Rachel’s sister, Marjorie Ehrhardt came to help out and in 1943, Marjorie and her husband George bought the resort and it was eventually calledEhrhardt’s. The resort stayed family owned until 2015, when it was acquired by the Genzlinger family, who changed the name back to Silver Birches. The Ehrhardt family has continued to work and consult with the Genzlinger’s.
We stayed in two rooms next to each other (L4 and L5)
My mother and son stayed in a Deluxe King Room, which offered a king bed, an electric fireplace, views of the lake, a flat-screen TV with cable, phone, WiFi, a Keurig Coffeemaker, Comphy bed linens, and a complimentary day pass to Lake Region Fitness.
I stayed right next door in the Standard Double Bed Room. It had two double beds, and a private bathroom with a standard tub/shower unit. It looked brand new, as it was renovated last year and absolutely spotless. Amenities include a flat-screen TV with cable, phone, WiFi, a Keurig Coffeemaker, Comphy bed linens and a complimentary day pass to Lake Region Fitness. It also had a fabulous view was incredible. How amazing is that sunset?
For dinner, we dined at the Boat House, which was a quick drive down the road.
We started with a salad.
The kids at our table, including my son, enjoyed chicken fingers, fries, and pizza.
I enjoyed a delicious steak.
Tip: The soda machine (which also has water bottles) is right underneath the Dock Restaurant, which is right on the property. If you need a toothbrush (like I did), there are convenience items at the Turkey Hill Gas station, which is about a mile down the road.
The next day we enjoyed a delicious breakfast in the cafe part of The Dock Restaurant.
Order at the counter and then they’ll bring you your order. I was very pleased that they offered almond milk for lattes and coffee drinks.
My son was pleased with his pancakes and I loved the vegetable quiche.
After breakfast, we went back to the Silver Birches for boating. I checked out the pool first, which was inviting (and I was happy to see a fence around it).
We decided to go kayaking. You can rent for 2 hours, half a day or a full day.
My son quickly took to kayaking and the boating staff was great about teaching him basic skills.
I was excited to go myself, but it was a bit nerve-wracking staying in my kayak and managing myself, while watching my son kayak and having to manage him.
We checked out at 11 AM (this is the area behind the front desk).
And then headed back to the Dock Restaurant for lunch.
We sat outside.
Both my mother and I heartily enjoyed the Pecan-crusted Salmon.
My son enjoyed a pizza.
Our bellies full, we set off to our packed Toyota Sienna Minivan for our next destination, Skytop Lodge.

Thank you to the Pocono Mountains Visitor Bureau for inviting us to experience the Poconos. My room and board were covered by the Visitors Bureau. As always, all opinions are uniquely my own.
