Studies have shown that girls as young as six are influenced by gender stereotypes, and that role models from the entertainment they choose can have a lasting effect. Recently, International Women’s Day was celebrated. Netflix is home to girls who mean business and that’s something all kids can get behind. Whether it’s Violet’s quick wit, Elena’s activist mentality, or Deidra & Laney’s unorthodox thinking, there’s something for every girl to relate to. And strong female characters aren’t just important for girls. Boys are growing up with Eleven saving the crew and Tip showing that true friendship knows no bounds.
The Best Female Characters on Netflix
Jessica Jones — She’s a bit of a mess personally, but she supports the downtrodden and is a good friend. I’d want her on my side. Plus, she’s really super strong and can kick butt.
Piper Chapman on Orange is the New Black – She doesn’t always do the right thing (hello, drug smuggling when she was in her 20’s and the panty business behind bars), but we love her anyway.
Grace and Frankie — I can’t decide who I like better? Uptight Grace or relaxed Frankie both tug at my heartstrings. They had a devasting end to their marriages, but are still going on and trying to do the best they can.
Eleven on Stranger Things – Eleven is super strong and luckily found some friends who have her back. Plus, she’s got powers.
Colleen Wing of Iron Fist – While I’m only on Episode 4 of Iron Fist, I really like how strong Colleen is. This dojo master can beat down bad guys and take care of herself, while taking are of others.
So, who’s your favorite female character on Netflix?
I love this from Netflix — You don’t need to fit in to stand out.
