Coming straight out of the most recent Comic Con at the end of July, we’re bringing you some great new Strawberry Shortcake merchandise. Check out this exclusive, limited-edition Funko Pop! figurine of everyone’s favorite villain, the Purple Pieman and his Berry Bird henchman (er — henchbird?) that the Strawberry Shortcake folks were kind enough to send to me. You may know Funko Pop! with their fun, big-eyed, vinyl style to characters from Game of Thrones, American Horror Story, and even The Golden Girls. Now you can get Strawberry Shortcake versions! They have Strawberry Shortcake & Custard, Lemon Meringue & Frappe, Orange Blossom & Marmalade, Blueberry Muffin (who was a fave of mine) & Cheesecake and Purple Pieman and Berry Bird. We’re so excited – since this release of the Funko Pop! Purple Pieman is an especially big deal for fans from Strawberry’s 1980s incarnation, when the evil Pieman with the twirly purple handlebar mustache terrified kiddies with his dastardly plans to take over Strawberryland. Purple Pieman is famous for doing a tap dance while saying “Yah-tah-tah-tah-tah-tah-tah-tah, tah-tah-tah-tah! Cha!
I was also sent a Comic-Con exclusive IDW Publishing comic book, featuring Strawberry Shortcake and Purple Pieman on the cover. The comic book contains two original Strawberry Shortcake stories: “The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of,” in which Strawberry has a fantastical dream about becoming a detective with Orange Blossom in order to search for a mysterious suitcase, and “Yes to the Dress,” in which Strawberry and Raspberry help the Sour Grapes twins pick out new dresses.
My 6 year old son immediately appropriated the Pieman, Blackbird, and comic book for himself.
