I’ve lived through both hurricanes Irene and Sandy, plus the NYC blackout and luckily I was fine. With three kids, though, you kind of start thinking about possible scenarios and as a mom I feel the need to be prepared for anything that can possibly happen in our area. In a real emergency, it’s crucial to be connected so that you can get help, if needed, or find out what is happening, whether you’re in your own house, on a boat or on a camping trip. I came across an incredible tool that features multiple products in one and can be a huge help in an emergency.
The Talkabout T480 two-way radio from Motorola is a state-of-the-art device that is always charged and ready to go, so if power is out or if a cell phone tower is down you can count on it to keep you connected. You can get weather alerts from NOAA weather radio. The two way radio has an emergency alert button to send out distressed calls. It is compatible with all other FRS/GMRS two-way radios, regardless of brand so you can communicate with your community. It has up to 35 miles range in mountain to valley region, up to 6 miles in open water and up to 1 mile in the neighborhood.
It includes FM radio, a built-in flashlight that turns on automatically when unplugged and rechargeable batteries (it can also be used with 3 regular AA batteries). It’s weatherproof and can be used in rain or snow and is eco-smart due to low energy consumption. Click here to see a video with all of the features.
I was not compensated for this post. I received samples.

This looks like a great addition to any emergency kit, and I can imagine it would come in handy if, like you said, cell phone towers went down. Thanks for sharing these radios.

Thanks for sharing this product! It’s a super useful review 🙂 I’ll have to add it to my kit – I literally just put together our family earthquake kit and plan last month, but we don’t have anything like this in there!
