As of mother of a child with Type 1 Diabetes, there are a lot of ducks I have to keep in a row. My son is almost 14 which means he does travel by himself. But what happens when someone needs to know about his medical devices (he wears 2 of them)? Or if g-d forbid, he was in an accident and they couldn’t reach my husband or I. They aren’t going to look for instructions. That’s where the SoomSafety App comes in. By simply scanning the bar code on the PDM (personal diabetes manager) my son carries, while using the SoomSafety App, information about what it does and how to use it comes up. There’s even a phone number listed. SoomSafety App: A Better Way to Keep All Your Medical Device Info in One Place | The Mama Maven Blog
How it Works
Courtesy of the Soom website, “SoomSafety is the first app to utilize openFDA, open-source databases created to enable developers to use FDA data. This year alone, . Too often recall information about an exact medical device is difficult to find. At Soom, we believe patients, caregivers and skilled care nurses should never wonder if a medical device is safe. Instead they should be empowered with easy to access, immediate answers and actionable information.”
When I scanned my son’s PDM, it also comes up as MRI unsafe — which is important because he would have to remove it for an MRI, which means that if my son needed an MRI for an emergency, would have to remove his insulin pod and deactivate it before he could have one. It also will tell me or another caregiver that his device is expired or recalled. Frankly, I think its genius and can’t wait until it expands to other prescriptions my son and family will use.
Features of the App:
- Scans medical device barcodes to automatically identify a medical device
- Stores medical devices in your “Product List”
- Checks for current FDA recall information
- Provides next steps in the event of a medical device recall
- Displays safety and use information specific to your products
- Groups medical devices for easy organization and access
- Lets you customize group names for optimal user personalization
- Pushes notifications if a stored medical device is ever recalled
- Lets you delete stored devices which have been used
Right now, the app is specific to medical devices, not prescription meds. I’m hoping in the future this would be possible, this could totally change how people are treated in emergency situations. My father is 82 and if he had the SoomSafety App on his iPhone or a list of his medications with QR Codes or bar codes, any doctors or nurses he sees could scan the list, using the SoomSafety App and know what he’s taking or any essential info.
