If you have a daughter in grade school, chances are you’ve at least heard of Ivy + Bean, the popular book series by Annie Barrows. The series has been adapted into a popular musical by Scott Elmegreen and luckily it’s playing this weekend in Manhattan. I got a chance to see it with my kids and we all loved it!
Ivy + Bean are two girls who are neighbors but don’t really like each other. Ivy is quiet, loves wearing dresses and dreams of becoming a (good) witch. Bean, on the other hand, is an energetic tomboy and loves to run around. One day Bean tries to hide from her older sister, Nancy, who wants to get her in trouble. Ivy helps her hide in her back yard and together they realize that they have more in common than they thought. They become good friends and have all kinds of adventures, most of which revolve around trying to teach Nancy a lesson. One afternoon when Nancy has to babysit Bean the two friends come up with a way to get Nancy in trouble and learn what friendship is all about.
I saw the show with my kids, ages 7.5 and 5.5. My oldest has read most of the Ivy + Bean books (repeatedly) so I knew she would love watching her beloved characters come to life. My 5.5 year old is not familiar with the series since he’s only in kindergarten and doesn’t read chapter books yet but he loved the story, the fun, catchy songs and the humor. I thought the musical was very well done with the direction of Alison Beatty and I especially loved Melissa Mahoney’s portrayal of Bean.
The performance is one hour long with no intermission. It’s appropriate for kids ages 4 and up.
