Ballerina Swan is a book by former Prima Ballerina Allegra Kent about a swan from Central Park who wants to learn to dance ballet. A few years ago I saw a show about the book and reviewed it here. The show was a big hit with parents and kids alike and now there’s a sequel to the story: Ballerina Swan and the Nutcracker, playing this month.
In Ballerina Swan and the Nutcracker, written by Barbara Zinn Krieger, Sophie the swan wants to participate in a Nutcracker performance that her ballet school is putting on. All of her dancer friends seem to have their parts, including a friend who is sure to play the role of the Nutcracker. But the arrival of a new dancer from Australia brings trouble: he is chosen to star in the show as the Nutcracker. Sophie’s friend is angry as he was hoping to have that role. The drama unfolds as Sophie discovers that the new dancer is also a swan just like her.
This performance is absolutely charming and just in time for the holiday season with the popular Nutcracker tunes. It is a delight for young fans of ballet and Sophie the swan is endearing. Just as in the previous show, kids are encouraged to participate in some of the ballet dancing.
The show is perfectly suited for the attention span of a young child at 50 minutes long and is recommended for kids ages 3-8. My almost ten-year-old daughter really liked it, especially the ballet dancing, which is done by professional dancers. I loved that the theater is very small so you can see well from any seat. We were sitting at the second to the last row and were still very close to the stage.
