We’ve all had a lot to deal with in the past few months, but it’s never too late to start some better habits. I’ve already shared that my caffeine use is off the charts and my sleep is worse than ever. But it’s time to make sure I taper all that down and start cleaning up my habits. Fall will be starting before we know it, and I know I do better when I have a daily routine set. I know I feel better when I eat healthy, exercise, and treat myself better – here are some small and simple suggestions that you can make along with me so we can all be our best selves.
Eating Healthy
Summertime is the opportunity time to make sure you are eating variety of fruits and veggies in all colors of the rainbow. The summer harvest is plentiful and the stores are abundant with freshly-grown fruits and veggies that contain vitamins and antioxidants. Here is a post that can help you navigate which foods are bladder-friendly and what to stay away from: https://www.themamamaven.com/finding-bladder-friendly-foods-and-new-depend-silhouette-underwear-debuts/
Setting Time Aside for Exercising
The summer heat might not be ideal for outdoor exercising but now is the perfect time to pop in an exercise DVD or watch a YouTube workout. Lifting dumbbells can help contribute to your daily exercise routine. Best of all? You can do it all with the air conditioning on and jump right in the shower when you’re done! I compiled a list of good free and paid workouts here: https://www.themamamaven.com/the-best-free-and-paid-online-workouts-you-can-do-at-home-now/
Using Sunscreen
One thing we tend to forget is to apply sunscreen (and to reapply when needed). When you are outdoors, especially at the pool or the beach, or even the park, it’s crucial to slather on sunscreen and make it a habit. Since social distancing outdoors may be our primary thing this summer, we need to make sure our skin is protected! Get some good sunscreen here: https://amzn.to/3iyeBQJ
Improving Sleep
Although the internet and television beckon you each night, it’s important to put down the devices and avoid screen time 30 minutes before bedtime so that you can rest your eyes as you prepare to wind down for the day. I try to keep a paperback by my bed to make sure I go screen free for a little while. You can also get blue light blocking glasses or a blue light screen protector.
Taking Walks in Nature
It’s important to make nature a part of your life, even if you live in the city. Weekend trips to a nature reserve and daily walks to a park (what is known as “forest bathing”) can help with your mental well-being. Many parks have restrooms or port-a-potties. I would check via the web before you go, as things are opening up and everything may not be open. We recently went to a park up in Rockland County, NY and I made sure to go to the restroom at the deli we went to first. I was wearing Depend so I felt secure anyway, but since I always have the urge to use the restroom, I was happy that I was able to go.
Taking Time to Give Thanks
Be sure to carve out some time each day – even 15 or 20 minutes will do – to practice writing in a journal, meditating and feeling appreciative. I know I am grateful for Depend, because it gives me confidence to live my life boldly.
