When Perdue Farms sent me their “Gatherings (Medium)” box recently, full of their delicious foods (read that post here) there was a SONOMA RED® Organic Pasture Raised Whole Chicken in the box. Last week I finally defrosted it and made a delicious air fryer roasted whole chicken. It was so super easy and I can’t wait to show you how! I mean, seriously, what’s not easy about roasted chicken in the air fryer??? But first, let me remind you about Perdue Farms.
About Perdue Farms
Over the last 10 years, Perdue Farms has transformed from from conventional chicken & turkey production to becoming the #1 supplier in the U.S. for Organic Chicken as well as a leader in premium Beef, Pork, Lamb, Pasture Raised, Grass-fed, Heritage Breed, Antibiotic Free (No Antibiotics Ever), Non-GMO, Ever, Certified Humane, GAP & more. For 100 years, Perdue Farms has worked with small family farmers to raise animals with care. Perdue Farms is passionate about farming, sustainability, land preservation and healthy and nutritious food.
You’re going to need a whole chicken. I used a SONOMA RED® Organic Pasture Raised Whole Chicken from Perdue Farms. When you order from Perdue Farms, all your food comes frozen and is ready to be popped into your freezer until you want to cook it. I saved this for last because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it. Then I though, I’m going to try it in my Air Fryer!
First thing I did was defrosted it for several hours and then I put it in a big metal bowl and removed the skin. Uncooked chicken doesn’t look glamorous, in case you were wondering. Putting it a big bowl was helpful, as my chicken didn’t go sliding all over the place when I used poultry shears to remove the skin.
Then I coated my chicken in Earth Balance (I just like it over some of the other buttery spreads). It’s Keto and Low Carb Friendly. Then I added spices. I was out of my favorite mediterranean seasoning, so I added some za’atar that I had brought back from Israel, oregano, garlic powder, thyme and rosemary. If you want to pick up some za’atar, I’ve linked to it on Amazon. Note it has sesame seeds in it, so make sure no one is allergic.
Then I tied the chicken legs together with some cooking twine and then placed it in my air fryer. I put it on 350 degrees for 43 minutes, turning it over once. I kept an eye on it as I thought it would take longer. Make sure you use a digital meat thermometer to check that your cooked whole chicken is the correct temperature. It came out delicious and so crispy! Note: Make sure your air fryer can handle the chicken size. I used the Power XL Air Fryer and the SONOMA RED® Organic Pasture Raised Whole Chicken fit in well, I just had to bind the chicken legs to make sure it was a little more compact.
My family thought it was delicious and I served it with a rice mix.
