When I was a little girl, Anne Shirley, Heidi and Dorothy were my favorite childhood book heroines. These days, my daughter’s favorite book character is Fancy Nancy and I couldn’t be more thrilled! Why? Maybe because the Fancy Nancy books have a really great lesson that’s also in touch with reality and expects kids to just be kids. Or maybe because the books make learning new words fun. Either way, when I recently had the opportunity to take my kids to Fancy Nancy The Musical I couldn’t wait! (Read more after the jump)
Based on Fancy Nancy and the Mermaid Ballet, the show is about Fancy Nancy having to accept the fact that she was not picked to be a mermaid in her dance recital while someone else was. Will she overcome a little jealousy? Will she be able to be a really awesome tree instead of a mermaid? As always, Nancy learns an important lesson – this one is about making the best of what you have. I won’t disclose too much, but I will say that one of the show stealers was Nancy’s friend Lionel dressed as a shark doing rap. While I’m on the subject, I want to mention that the entire cast was top-notch and everything – from props to music – was very professional.
My kids, needless to say, absolutely loved the show – so much so, that my daughter who is painfully shy and barely talks to people other than her immediate family, found the courage to get up on stage and parade with all the other kids and even follow Nancy straight out the theater! After the show my daughter repeatedly asked to see the show again.
The show is running through November 12th and plays on Saturdays and Sundays at 11am, 1pm and 3pm (no 3pm show on Oct. 17th).
Holiday shows are October 17 and November 6 & 12 at 11am and 1pm.
Price: $29.50 regular admission; $49.50 premium.
Vital Theater:
2162 Broadway, 4th floor at 76th Street, New York, NY 10024
I was not compensated for this post. I received tickets to the show and a gift bag.
