My name is Carrie Morrison and I am the proud (and often scattered) mom of 4 kiddos ages 5 – 15. I am contributing to The Mama Maven as the matriarch of a newly gluten-free family of 6.
We began eating gluten-free 6-months ago after my 7 year-old Logan was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. I went through phases of sadness, frustration and even anger, Logan on the other hand just asked questions about what foods he couldn’t eat and was happy to hear there were gluten-free alternatives for his beloved soft-pretzels and cookies. He was relieved that he would be able to still have sandwiches and he just moved on. I was skeptical when our doctor assured me that this disease was “en vogue” and there were tons of gluten-free substitutes available. I doubted the taste and quality of these “GF foods”, but I was determined to find the best of the best for my little guy.
As a family of 6, it was going to be hard to please everyone’s taste and keep L-man safe from being “glutened” in his own home by cross-contamination. We are a primarily gluten-free house, other than the occasional take-out pizza and bag of cookies and I am pleased to report there are some AMAZING gluten-free foods out there. I hope that our reviews will help other families enjoy GF living without having to go through the time (and money) of weeding though some of the less yummy varieties.
