Vital Theater has cooked up another delicious treat for local kids here in New York. After the success of the musicals Angelina Ballerina, Fancy Nancy and Pinkalicious (the last one is still playing) Vital Theater has produced Peace, Love and Cupcakes, a new musical based on the best-seller by the same name. The original book is written by Sheryl Berk (co-author of Soul Surfer) and her daughter, Carrie Berk, 11, who co-wrote it while in second grade! I recently attended a performance with my kids and we were all enamored with this fun production.
Kylie Carson is a little different from her classmates in middle school. While everyone loves celebrities and pop culture, she’s into monster movies. At a club fair at school she tells someone, on a whim, that she’s a part of a club that sells cupcakes. In reality, Kylie hasn’t the slightest idea how to make cupcakes but she starts the club anyway and is joined by three other “outcasts”. With a combination of their talents they create a successful business but when a jealous classmate tries to destroy the business Kylie has to make some tough decisions.
My kids and I were absolutely delighted by the show. The bright and colorful costumes and the adorable scenic design only added to the atmosphere and the fun songs really made the show. The cast had beautiful voices – perfect for a musical. There were so many songs, it seems every minute someone started a new song – which was fine by me. My five-year-old son was able to stay focused the entire time, I believe largely due to the music. I liked the strong message of accepting those who are different from us.
The show runs 75 minutes and is recommended for kids ages 6-12 (younger kids who are into music would love this, too). After the show you can meet the cast for photo ops and autographs.
