By Eric Horn, Mr. Mama Maven
My daughter and I were invited to a preview of Captain Marvel this week. She is a huge marvel fan and a bit of a super hero in her own right. She has seen all of the MCU movies and has read a lot of comic books on top of that. So she was completely prepared to see Captain Marvel. There was a lot of set up required at the beginning of the movie to get the audience acclimated to the war between the Kree and the Skrulls, and about forty years of comic book history, but she knew all about them before she even stepped into the theater. No Spoiler Review: Captain Marvel | The Mama Maven Blog
There was a little bit of everything in this movie. It was a bit of a buddy movie with Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel kicking butt and Samuel L. Jackson’s digitized younger Nick Fury bringing a lot of humor and human perspective to the movie. It was a real treat seeing Nick Fury before he had seen it all. He was also great with one of the other big stars of the movie, Goose the Cat.
I can’t say anything else about Goose but he was a great scene stealer and hands down my daughter’s favorite character. Ben Mendelson gave excellent depth and personality to a shape shifting skrull, which is not an easy thing to do. The one character that I felt was under-utilized was Annette Benning. It would be a spoiler to go into her role but she was captivating every time she was on the screen. I would have loved to have seen her interact with Captain Marvel in a way Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym did with Paul Rudd’s Antman.
