Looking for a funny read about parenting? Check out my friend Lizz Dinnigan’s new book, “I Have Sand in my Arm: Quotes and Short Stories from Raising Two Hilarious Boys. This collection of funny and touching vignettes is about daily life with two rambunctious boys, and the stress, frustration and insanity that accompanies being a mom in suburban New Jersey in the 21st century.
Lizz (who I’ve known since I was 15) is hysterical. Dinnigan documented every milestone and funny morsel of her sons’ early childhoods. Her meticulous journal-keeping began in 2003, when she was pregnant with her first child, Jack, and evolved through 2013 when her second son, Casey, turned 6. One son wedges a pencil eraser deep inside his ear cavity on the first day of school. The other child begs for wontons and ravioli for breakfast. Jack is more laid-back and subdued, while Casey is hilariously eccentric. Both personalities are captured on the page and shine. And as the children grow older, even more hijinks and hilarity ensue.
Parents everywhere will find this 137-page speed-read amusing, but you don’t have to be a mom or dad to appreciate the humor. Both stay-at-home and working moms will find the material relatable.
