Oftentimes, when I teach my kids about certain animals I google pictures and videos, but it’s not that easy when it comes to dinosaurs. The only online options I have is showing them drawings, clips from Jurassic Park (which they are obviously too young for) or shows like Dinosaur Train (which is adorable, but still a cartoon). Luckily, the Museum of Natural History in Manhattan not only has a dinosaur exhibit, but is also currently showing a movie called Flying Monsters. (Read more after the jump)
I recently attended a screening of the film with my 5-year-old daughter and thought it was amazing! The movie is about dinosaurs – pterosaurs to be exact – who roamed the sky 220 million years ago. Written and directed by Sir David Attenborough, it was inspired by the computer-generated images in the movie Avatar and they have been implemented in the movie to create the pterosaurs. The award-winning film discusses how these huge creatures evolved and also explains how and why they were able to fly in a way that’s very easy to understand, even for young children. Truthfully, I was a little concerned that my daughter wouldn’t understand what was going on or that she would find the movie scary (even though it’s rated G). My daughter wasn’t scared at all. She understood most of what it was about and both of us were really impressed by the CGI graphics. There were lots of kids in the theater – mostly boys – but my daughter, who’s into princesses and all things pink loved the movie!
Flying Monsters is playing daily until January 4th, 2013 at the LeFrak theater inside the Museum of Natural History at Central Park West at 79th Street.
The movie is shown from 10:30am-4:30pm, hourly.
To purchase tickets in advance call 212-769-5200 or visit amnh.org.
I was not paid for this post. I did receive complimentary tickets to the movie.
