Being bilingual has many advantages, but you don’t have to be fluent in a language to reap the benefits – even learning several words can be enriching for young children as they navigate the world of language and sound. Canticos is a unique series of books based on Spanish nursey rhymes that are the perfect way to introduce infants to Spanish.
The collection includes 12 books, the first of which, Little Chickies/Los Pollitos, is now out in stores. As with all of the books in the collection, it’s also based on a nursery rhyme (Lo Pollitos Dicen – Little Chicks Say). It’s an accordion-shaped board book with lift-the-flaps and has a Spanish version on the opposite side.
My son, who is three-and-a-half and doesn’t speak Spanish at all, had a lot of fun with this book. He was able to lift the flaps and repeat some of the words when I read them in Spanish. His favorite part is spinning the wheel when the hen goes to get food. I love that the book is small and sturdy, so he can take it with him in the car and keep himself occupied.
We downloaded the app that comes with the book and reinforces the words in Spanish. The nursery rhyme is available in 8 languages and there are other activities like clicking on the egg to make it “hatch”, decorating a bouquet or an egg, or stumming on a guitar. My older kids liked the app as well.
