We were invited to check out Head Over Heels Musical on Broadway recently. The story is based on The Arcadia James Shirley‘s dramatization of the prose romance, The Countess of Pembroke’s Arcadia by Sir Philip Sidney (source Wikipedia) and the music of The Go Go’s and Belinda Carlisle’s solo music. We had a complete and total blast at Head Over Heels. As a fan of The Go Go’s, I loved that their music was spotlighted in the show. Head Over Heels Musical on Broadway – Does It Have the Beat?
While there have been some changes to the story, Musidorus (the poor shepherd) is in love with Philoclea, the younger daughter of King. The King doesn’t really like that. Older sister Pamela is a real character (and stole the show for us). Her confidence is amazing. She falls in love with someone unexpected and that was one of my favorite parts of the musical, watching that love grow. The poor shepherd changes and his new look is loved by all. And I mean all. There’s some prophecies, funny characters, general mayhem. In the end, everything is resolved (it’s a fun musical, right?). The beat really was infectious and between the amazingly talented cast and the scenery and effects, this is a winner.
Performers Rachel York (the Queen), Bonnie Milligan (Pamela) and Taylor Iman Jones (Mopsa) really stood out. The King was very funny (and liked my Instagram Post) and I also enjoyed the King’s aide, Dametas (Mopsa’s father). And you can’t miss the brilliance of Peppermint as Pythio. She’s so magnetic!
The sets were colorful, the energy was terrific and I enjoyed the live music (there’s a band behind the curtain in the back of the stage). A week later and I’m still singing the songs — I hope a soundtrack comes out soon!
PSST. I’m pretty sure I saw Belinda Carlisle go upstairs in the theatre.
