I was really excited to hear that Julie Andrews recently debuted in Julie’s Greenroom on Netflix. But what I didn’t expect for my children (and I) to completely ADORE this show. Performing arts, as well as fine arts, is so important to child development and creativity. My two older children (ages 9 and 11) are members of our public school’s Glee Club and I love to sing and was in many a performing arts class or theatrical performance when I was in school. While I was never good enough to go pro, it wasn’t about that. It was about showing my creativity and love of performing on the stage. During a time when arts education has been lessened and deprioritized, I’m really pleased that Netflix has programming for kids and families that celebrates the arts and inspires kids to bring stories to life through their own talents.
Julie Andrews will be making her Netflix debut in Julie’s Greenroom. Brought to life by the Jim Henson Company, the enriching show advocates for the arts and the positive impact creativity can have on every child’s life. In the show, Ms. Julie and her devoted assistant Gus (Giullian Yao Gioiello) bring the performing arts to a new generation of kids known as the “Greenies,” played by original puppet characters built by the renowned Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. The Greenies are a diverse group of kids who are mesmerized by all that the arts and creativity has to offer. Over the course of the season, with Ms. Julie’s guidance and inspiration from the visiting guest artists, the kids create an entirely original new show, that is a mashup of all the performing arts including mime, music, dance, improv, circus arts, voice and more. With an array of very special guests (Idina Menzel, Sara Bareilles, Josh Groban, and Alec Baldwin to name a few), Julie’s Greenroom might be a show you turn on for the kids but find yourself staying until the final curtain call.
My younger two loved the Greenies. My daughter explains in our video that the Greenies sing, dance and act. Julie Andrews is encouraging and supportive, everything you would want in a performing arts instructor.
The Greenies include:
- Hank (John Tartaglia) – A paraplegic member of the Greenies.
- Fizz (Dorien Davies) – Member of the Greenies.
- Peri (performed by Stephanie D’Abruzzo) – Member of the Greenies. Think like Rachel Berry from Glee
- Riley (performed by Jennifer Barnhart) – a gender non-binary (the first such character in a preschool series) member of the Greenies.
- Spike (performed by Frankie Cordero) – Member of the Greenies.

My younger son also liked the Duck, named Hugo, and my daughter liked Toby, the little dog. Fizz was my favorite.

My daughter made the Peri sock puppet.
I look forward to the videos we’ll make – I’ll post them — but thank you to Julie’s Greenroom and Netflix – you really started something here that I am proud to stream.
