I am not going to throw out any spoilers but Guardians of the Galaxy was a fantastic movie… As a superhero movie it was better than the Avengers and as a space movie I would have to go back a long way to come up with something comparable. It was better than the last two Star Trek movies and Serenity.
It was probably the best space movie I can think of since the Fifth Element. That is saying a lot, in particular, since there are so many ways it could go wrong.
Let’s start with Bradley Cooper playing Rocket Raccoon, a genetically and bionically modified gun-toting raccoon space pilot, and Vin Diesel playing Groot, an alien regenerating tree.
They could easily have been a massive train wreck but they were so well done that they fit in seamlessly.
The other major hitch could have been the amount of action taking place at one time. With all the big land and space battles going on it could have turned into a disjointed mess, but they managed to keep the flow of the movie coherent throughout the busiest scenes. I also thought that the 3D and CGI effects were beautifully layered into the film and worked with the story instead of trying to jump out for attention.
The movie was fun and funny. The characters were great and Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana excellent leads.
Plus, while my eight year old son crawled up and down his seat with the action — he never had to bury his head. The language used was marginally bad but was pretty tame. I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did.
Opening today, go see Guardians of the Galaxy.

Thank to Disney for sending us to a screening. As always, all opinions are my own.
