When I was growing up, there was a place that made me feel safe and secure. That was Surprise Lake Camp. Surprise Lake Camp is a non-profit sleepaway camp for children that was founded in 1902, and besides being a camper myself, several of my family members also went there. My grandfather, Ben Glassman, was a winter camper at Surprise Lake. His father had died when he was a kid, and thanks to Surprise Lake Camp, he was able to get out of the Lower East Side to get some fresh air and activity.
My uncle and brother also went there. For me, when I was growing up, Surprise Lake Camp was a place that I needed due to relationships that weren’t great at home. At Surprise Lake, I gained independence and also made a lot of friends that I still talk to. And more importantly, I was there on a scholarship and able to go to camp because of the generosity of others.
Now, I send my own daughter there, as well as giving to the camp’s scholarship fund so other children like me can have the same chance that I did. But I try to do more, and did you know that Amazon makes it very easy to give back this holiday season (and all year round) with Amazon?
You Can Donate Several Ways Using Amazon
AmazonSmile lets you support your favorite charity by donating a portion of the purchase price of eligible products to a charity of your choice. It’s so easy to set up – just visit smile.amazon.com – and you will barely even have to think about it.
AmazonSmile Charity Lists allow you to browse by cause or search for your favorite charity’s Charity Lists where you can purchase items to be donated and sent directly to the charity at their designated address. This is also super easy, and I love knowing that the charity I am buying for is getting the items directly. I don’t have to go to the store and then package everything and hit the Post Office.Over the years I have bought personal care products and needed children’s games and toys. It’s truly a fantastic way to make sure an organization is getting exactly what they ask for. It’s also a great way to encourage others to give to the organization you are trying to help. People like being able to fulfill these requests.
If you are a fan of Alexa, it’s so easy to donate to a registered charity of your choice using Alexa. Just say, “Alexa, I want to make a donation” to any Alexa-enabled device.
The way I support Surprise Lake Camp is through AmazonSmile. I have it set up so they benefit when I go to buy something on Amazon (and I have it bookmarked since I buy a ton of things through Amazon,) – it’s just simple to support Surprise Lake Camp that way. I want to give children like me and my daughter a safe and healthy place to spend their summers.

These are great suggestions for giving back! Our children picked a charity to give to this year, they picked World Vision and it’s so nice to see them pulling together to give.

Giving back is so important this time of year. We try to work at community meals to volunteer to anyone who needs a meal all year long. Some kids don’t get food during the holiday breaks when school is out. This is such a thoughtful post.
