My family loves when I make Steel Cut Oatmeal. However, it takes a long time to make it on the stove — I used to make it in my slow cooker and loved it, but once I got my Instant Pot, that became my favorite way to make it. It’s super easy and you only need a few ingredients and around 20 minutes or so to make it. I love to make apple cinnamon flavored steel cut oatmeal, so I add one diced up apple and a cinnamon to taste to it. However, if you want to add any other fruit, go for it. I’ve added frozen berries — either before or after I’ve cooked it, chopped almonds or walnuts, pecans, coconut…etc. You really can do anything you want! Easy Instant Pot Apple Cinnamon Steel Cut Oatmeal
You’ll need steel cut oats, an organic apple or two, cinnamon to taste, butter or plant based buttery spread, and water. For toppings, you can use one of the apples, raisins, chopped almonds, pecans — whatever you want. I also add a little sugar free maple syrup or stevia. You can add another sweetener and some milk or milk alternative like almondmilk.
This recipe is based on Laurel Randolph’s Instant Pot Apple Cinnamon Steel Cut Oatmeal Recipe, but I’ve made several modifications.
I prefer steel cut oatmeal over instant – and with the Instant Pot, it is so simple. As in set it and forget it easy. I can’t screw it up. However, make sure you have time to actually make this — give it 25- 30 minutes.
It cooks for 7 minutes, but you have to let it get up to pressure and then do a natural release (and let it sit for 10 more minutes). There still may be a little pressure when the 10 minutes is up. Proceed carefully to turn the vent to sealing (ie. use a silicone glove).
This makes 2 servings. Feel free to double or triple it it if you need more servings – add a little more water (1/2 cup) if you do double or triple this. The sugar in the recipe info is from the apple and oatmeal. I usually add a zero calorie sweetener after.
Your steel cut oatmeal should be perfect! Add your toppings and dig in.

Easy Instant Pot Apple Cinnamon Steel Cut Oatmeal
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp butter or plant based buttery spread
- 2 1/2 cups water
- 1 cup Steel Oats I try to use organic if possible
- 1 apple I used an organic medium-sized gala apple – you can leave this out and add another fruit before cooking or after cooking. If you love bananas in your oatmeal, I’d recommend adding them afterwards
- Cinnamon to taste also optional
- After your Oatmeal is made you can add milk or a milk alternative (like almondmilk or coconut milk) and either maple syrup, sugar free maple syrup or stevia.
- This makes 2 servings. Feel free to double or triple it it if you need more servings.
Instructions
- Add the butter/buttery spread to your instant pot.
- Then add water and then the oats. Stir.
- Then add cinnamon and apple. Stir
- Then close your Instant Pot and make sure you turn the dial to sealing. Select manual high pressure and set for 7 minutes. After the Instant Pot stops cooking, let it count up to 10 more minutes and then turn it off (this is a natural release). The pin should drop down and there should be no steam when you turn the lid and release your instant pot. If you are new to instant pot life, I would make sure you use an oven-safe silicone glove to make sure you are less nervous about opening a steaming pot (there will be no steam from your instant pot valve on this).
- Your steel cut oatmeal should be perfect! Add your toppings and dig in.

Looks like a great breakfast! I wonder if these oats are the same as the ones we have in Sweden? These look a lot smaler and ours are finished in just a few minutes… Need to do some research I think!

There are several kinds, I just feel that steel cuts are the healthiest ones I can get in the US — would love to see what Sweden has!
