If you love Israeli or Middle Eastern food, chances are you’re already a fan of Za’atar (you might spell it Zaatar) – which is a spice blend containing toasted sesame seeds, thyme, marjoram, coriander, oregano. Last week I picked up Trader Joe’s Za’atar Seasoning Blend and loved it. I had some Za’atar I took back in 2019 from Israel, but I’ve long run out. This tasted so similar. Trader Joe’s version of Za’atar Seasoning has toasted sesame seeds, thyme, marjoram, coriander, oregano, plus chickpea flour, sunflower, and lemon oil – so we considered it safe for my husband with Celiac Disease. I decided to make air fryer za’atar spiced chicken drumsticks (or chicken legs as some people call it). It was amazing and I can’t wait to show you what I did to make this.
You can make this in the oven, of course, but I love the way that that chicken comes out in the air fryer. It’s so crispy without using a lot of oil. I love using non-propellant oil spray (Pompeian is one brand I use) to coat my chicken and give it some zing. Now add some Za’atar and you’re really going to make this extra delicious!
We know I like simple recipes and this one is very simple. Read on to find out how to make my air fryer za’atar spiced chicken drumsticks.
Ingredients
Chicken drumsticks (1 package usually has 6)
Za’atar spice blend – if you can’t find the Trader Joe’s version, any kind should do like this: https://amzn.to/3ktlfvb
Oil spray or oil of your choice — I used Pompeian’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil Spray
Instructions:
Spray or coat your chicken drumstick with oil spray or oil.
I always cut the skin off. I line my air fryer tray with either tinfoil (don’t come at me) or parchment paper.
Shake Trader Joe’s Za’atar seasoning blend on your drumstick.
Air fry for around 40- 45 minutes at 400 degrees, turning over after 20 minutes.
Now 45 minutes may seem long to you, but it was absolutely perfect for my tastes.
I recommend checking it at 30-35 minutes and seeing if it’s done. Mine was perfect after 45 minutes (I always make my husband check to see if poultry or beef is fully cooked). Enjoy your air fryer za’atar spiced chicken drumsticks! I know we did. This is a perfect entree for any night and really goes well with everything. Plus its so easy and your family will think you worked so hard on these. Since it’s so hot here in NYC, I prefer to use my air fryer or my instant pot so I don’t have to stand over a hot oven!
If you use a basket air fryer, it may take less time. I used the Emeril Lagasse Power AirFryer 360 Oven and I absolutely love it. It can be used to air fry, toast, broil, slow cook and more. I seriously use it everyday. It’s super easy to clean, which is a huge plus in my book.
