By Mr. The Mama Maven
A few years ago I had a very strange reaction when I read the Aeneid. I thought about how it opened up new regions of the world of the Odyssey and I felt compelled to take it farther. After all, this was one of the most interesting times in human history. In addition to the scattering of the Trojan War heroes, it was the time of the Hebrew Judges, the last great Pharaoh, the settlement of Carthage and the fall of the Hittite Empire. I wanted to take a journey from Northern Africa and travel to all the lands around the entire Mediterranean to not only tie these events together but also bring in the literary fragments and archaeological evidence to visit unknown civilizations.
Then to top it off, I painted two massive works in the style of relief carvings to illustrate the book. To be honest, I might have overdone those since they are so large I have had a hard time finding a place to hang them. Across Ancient Sands: The Poet Sfas’ journey around the Mediterranean Sea in the Early 12th Century BCE Poem – Now Free on Amazon!
The story follows a Numidian scribe, Sfas, from his first steps beyond the Atlas Mountains. He is sent to the budding Phoenician colony at Utica, later part of the Carthaginian homeland, to bring a message to a Phoenician prince. Of course, things do not go exactly as planned either before or after he arrives in Phoenicia and Sfas finds himself in a series of adventures and situations.
Through his travels, he comes across a range of characters of mythical, biblical and historical backgrounds. He literally goes off the maps of the time and uncovers the mysteries of the world at large.
