As someone who is not-so-good at math (ok, this is a huge understatement) I was somewhat reluctant to the idea of taking my kids to a math museum. Would I be able to help them and explain things to them? This was my first misconception. My second misconception was about how long we’d stay. MoMath – the National Museum of Mathematics – is a two-story museum that’s rather small so I assumed the kids will breeze through the activities and we’ll be done in two hours max. Again, I could not have been more wrong. MoMath is indeed two floors but you can spend all day here and still not do everything. I recently took the kids and they didn’t want to go home! We got to MoMath at 11 in the morning and left at 4:30 in the afternoon (we took an hour to go to lunch). During our time at the museum my kids (ages 6, 10 and 12) had a blast doing all the activities (there are 42 total!) and I was thrilled to find several employees roaming throughout the museum, happy to explain how to do them and helped with solving some challenges. As mentioned, my kids complained when we had to leave and I never once heard from any of them “I’m bored”. In fact, they were so excited they went back to some of the exhibits, just because it was so much fun for them.
