Like most kids, my kids love testing limits; my boys are at an age where they love using potty words when they shouldn’t and I hate to be that mom that’s always scolding them. Now I don’t have to! Not Parent Approved is an award-winning game that allows your kids to be….well…kids. Inspired by Cards Against Humanity, Not Parent Approved gives kids permission to say words and phrases they might get in trouble for. We tried a few rounds of the game and got lots of laughs! Here’s how to play the game:
There are two types of cards: red and blue. Red cards are answer cards and blue cards are question cards. Each player has to burp (real or fake). The winner gets to be the Burp Boss (my kids got tired of pretending to burp so they just took turns being Burp Boss). Next, each player, other than Burp Boss, takes seven red cards. The Burp Boss draws a blue card and reads it aloud and then the players choose one of the 7 red cards that they think fits best with the question. They slide it to the Burp Boss face down, he or she shuffles the cards and, after reading the question and each answer, picks the best answer to the question. The winner gets to keep the blue card and scores a point. The player with the most blue cards wins in the end. Here are some sample blue question cards:
“If it were up to me, my homework assignment would be _____”, “One time after trick or treating, I found ____ in my bag”, “It’s annoying that parents are so obsessed with ____”, “My mom read my diary and found out that I really like ____”
Here are some sample red answer cards:
“A big, red, wet-looking zit on your nose”, “Traveling into outer space”, “Hairy armpits”, “The school mascot”, “Riding a unicycle while juggling bananas”
Needless to say, this was a huge hit with my kids! They were giggling the entire time and it was fun to watch them let loose and use words that they normally would not be allowed to use, especially at the dinner table, like “fart”.
The game includes some empty cards so that you can make your own, plus you can order refills when you’ve played with all the cards over and over (which I think we will). The game is for kids ages 8 and up but younger kids who can read will enjoy it as well. It’s for 4-10 players and takes between 6-60 minutes to play. I loved that the box is small and compact so you can take it with you and play while waiting for the food to come at the restaurant, or even when you’re in the car.
