STEM toys are very popular these days, as parents are realizing kids can get an early start on science and engineering. Some have been adding an A for “arts” to the acronym and these days people are noticing that reading (and writing) play an integral part of scientific activities so there’s a new acronym: STREAM. Toys that include all aspects of STREAM make the experience more complete as kids can use both right and left brain as they play with those toys. STREAM Toys Find: Kids Can Create Electronic 3D Circuits with E-Blox
While some kids may shy away from engineering and science-related activities, when it comes to playing with a toy that includes all aspects of STREAM, kids, without realizing it, they will end up learning basics of robotics, engineering and architecture, to name a few. E-Blox are special building bricks that enable kids to create 3D electronic circuits with no wires needed. The patented blocks carry electric circuits through a 9V battery and have LEDs in them. They are totally safe – an internal thermal fuse prevents overheating if there’s a short circuit.
E-Blox comes with several different themes that are built around stories, all recommended for kids ages 8 and up. I received The Island for review. (There’s also The City and The Cave). The Island ($54.99) contains 8 projects that kids can build – all of which have several blocks that light up. Kids can also choose to build their own unique designs. As part of the story, the main character and his dog investigate distant lights on a nearby island. Aside from building the projects, there are also various tasks that kids are encouraged to do, such as use morse code to solve a message, go online to locate the island’s actual locating and other activities.
Here’s one of the 8 projects – a cat:
Another project – a morse code generator:
