4 British Comedies on Netflix Worth Watching

We’re almost a month into the new year (can you believe it?) and that means more entertaining content from Netflix is here (and coming) for us to watch as a family. But first — some cool British comedies to stream without the kids and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy Returns! Borderline – is in a similar vein to the Office as in a mock documentary style. It’s about a team of border agents (like our TSA) working a fictional airport called Northend. There are some very funny characters and situations. According to Wikipedia,  “Borderline is “retro-scripted”: The cast is given a plot outline to guide them as they improvise their dialogue and actions.” We’re about 5 episodes in, but we’re liking it. Check it out. 

Fried is a sitcom that focuses on a fried chicken restaurant in Croydon called Seriously Fried Chicken. A new manager named Mary Fawn comes in and co-worker Derek is annoyed because he wanted the job. He’s kind of a pathetic person, but he keeps trying to undermine her (think Dwight from the office but much less attractive). Young Joe likes Amara, who is only working there to make money for her father and won’t give Joe a chance. Shontel is scary and Ed, who plays the Chicken Mascot just jokes around all the time. The show stars Katy Wix, Mandeep Dhillon, Matthew Cottl, William Melling, Imran Yusuf, and Lorna Gayle. You may remember Katy Wix from “The Lying Detective” episode of Sherlock in 2017. We enjoyed this series (but it’s a short one – 6 episodes).

You may have heard of the IT Crowd.  Headed up by a manager who knows NOTHING about tech, a couple of IT guys are the IT department in a big corporation. Starring: Chris O’Dowd as Roy, Richard Ayoade as Moss, and Katherine Parkinson as Jenn. They’ve tried to bring this to the US a few times, but we were perfectly happy watching the British version. Matt Berry from Toast of London stars as the owner’s son (and resident horndog). We had fun watching this one!

And then finally, my favorite British comedy on Netflix.

If you’re not watching Toast of London, you’re really missing something. We actually just watched the 3 season series AGAIN and it’s coming back!!! According to a Deadline article in November, it’s coming back –  http://deadline.com/2017/11/matt-berry-toast-of-london-is-to-return-1202214350/. I mentioned it in my last Netflix post, but this is a very funny series (but totally not kid appropriate). There’s even a Jon Hamm episode called “Hamm on Toast”. Matt Berry stars as Steven Toast, a middle-aged, recently divorced actor in London’s worst play. Due to said divorce, he’s a lodger in an older actor’s home. He gets into some crazy situations and you’ll laugh over his reaction to Clem Fandango, played by Shazad Latif (now on Star Trek Discovery), who works in the Voiceover Studio where Steven freelances.
