School’s FINALLY done here in NYC. My kids finished grades 4, 2, and Kindergarten. While it was mostly a good year, we were all ready to see it end. I’m so happy summer is here. Or “summah” as one of my friends calls it.
B. finished 4th grade and ended up with a 3 in Math. He struggled all year — some tests went well, some didn’t. He worked hard and struggled and I’m thrilled that he ended up with a 3 (highest grade is a 4). I can accept a 3, but not a 2. He improved in writing – it helped that he was approved for an assistive technology device this year (due to his OT issues). He would write his homework assignments down, as well as do his in class writing assignments on it – and then print it out on his teachers’ computer. He typed his reading responses at home. He had absolutely wonderful teachers this year (we’ve been so lucky with all the teachers at our school – complete gems).
Little Miss A became a reader this year. Her teachers were instrumental in that. She ended up with a 4 in Math and Science (girlpower!) and we are really proud of her. We need to work on writing next year, she has terrific ideas, but isn’t a big fan of writing and spelling.
She had her moving up ceremony earlier in the week and I am so proud of her.
And now for the little one. He had a big year. A year of growing up, finding out that he was incredibly smart – when he could behave and focus. He slid back when his teacher was taken out of the class in April. We still miss her and we’re still not sure what happened.
We like the teacher that eventually came in – she had a lot of patience and unfortunately S is very trying. We start an evaluation by a developmental pediatrician this summer. I’m really not sure what S ‘has’, but we need to find out how we can help him more. We’re clearly failing him right now. He gets very angry and defiant and it causes a lot of stress in our family. He’s very bright so I’m very happy he’s going to first grade. We weren’t sure if he was going to get to promoted and would have been fine if he had repeated Kindergarten — which both his sister and his brother had done. For support in first grade, S will have a full time para and be in an ICT Co-teaching class, plus continuing speech therapy, OT, PT, and counseling. His speech isn’t his biggest problem anymore, it’s focus and behavior. While I have two other kids with IEPS (individualized education plans), it’s really only OT and PT issues now for them.
So, tell me how your children’s year went?
