Winter is coming to an end but it’s still cold out and there are many weekends when we’re hanging out at home with the kids, just relaxing and not doing too much. We typically like to have some music in the background to help the kids settle down when they get cabin fever. I personally love jazzy albums and “easy listening”-type songs that are classy and elegant, as opposed to cheesy. I recently came across an album that is the perfect easy listening for kids and adults alike: “I Believe in Little Things” by Diana Panton.
Diana Panton is a Canadian jazz vocalist who is the 2015 JUNO award winner for best jazz vocal recording for her album RED. In “I Believe in Little Things” she takes the jazzy style and makes it kid-friendly in a way that also appeals to adults. The album includes 14 songs from Disney films, Willy Wonka, Sesame Street and The Muppet Movie, plus an original song written by the songstress.
I received the album for review and the very first time I listened to it – right from the get-go – I fell in love with Diana’s voice. The first song in the album is “In a World of My Own” from Disney’s Alice in Wonderland. When the song began and Diana’s voice came on I just stopped what I was doing and listened. After about 30 seconds I stopped the CD and called my husband over to come and listen. Diana’s unique voice filled the room and completely captured our attention. Her voice is a mix of sweetness and warmth and although it’s high-pitched it’s also rich with color.
After the first song we enjoyed the rest of the songs in the album – each one more beautiful than the next. I especially loved “Halfway Down the Stairs”, written by Winnie the Poo’s A. A. Milne, as well as “The Rainbow Connection” (my kids’ favorite – they belt it out when it comes on) and “Sleep is a Precious Thing”, written by Diana herself, which was reminiscent of Nora Jones’ “Come Away with Me”.
The album is not only great for cozy afternoons, it also works in the car, when the kids are getting wild and need something to calm them down. It can also be a great lullaby CD for infants and kids of any age. Diana Panton’s I Believe in Little Things Album Review
