I had the opportunity to attend MotherStruck! recently. It chronicles Staceyann Chin’s very personal journey from being a tween in her native Jamaica, coming out as a lesbian, moving to NYC and her quest to have a child. Staceyann was absolutely riveting and a fantastic talent. In fact, you won’t be able to take your eyes off her. Produced by Rosie O’Donnell and directed by Cynthia Nixon, make sure you get tickets to see this off Broadway show before it sells out!
This is a solo show and besides a round ottoman, there isn’t a set. However, Staceyann doesn’t need much. She is a true storyteller, which is pretty rare these days of being addicted to our mobiles with contstant instagrams, tweeting, and snapchatting. She gets very personal and candid about her life.
In the beginning part, she described how her Auntie treats her — and the way she tells her story, I couldn’t help but picture her aunt scolding her and “instructing her” on how to act around the boys. Later on, she brings the Auntie back into the story and it’s even more powerful to see where the relationship changes. It’s not always a happy story, in fact there are parts where I teared up, but I really felt Staceyann’s pain and longing — and I was rooting for her.
She portrayed her pregnancy powerfully and totally realistically. Like Staceyann, I was nauseous most of my pregnancy with B (I threw up ’til month 7), so when she talked about going everywhere with plastic bags in her purse, I laughed, because I did that also. As a mother, I could really identify with the part where she talks about being handed her child and not really being sure what to do — because kids don’t come with a manual. Even though things were very difficult for Staceyann in life, she never gave up her spirit or stopping trying for more.
We heartily recommend MotherStruck! You will tear up and you will laugh, but you’ll be in awe of Staceyann Chin’s performance.
