The Nutcracker- the story about a young girl’s visit to the land of sweets – is one of the most popular kid-friendly stories of all times. Since the story takes places during Christmastime, the ballet is typically held around the holidays and is a always huge hit due to the familiar music that we all know and love. The New York Theatre Ballet is, once again, holding seven one-hour-long performances of The Nutcracker as part of their kid-friendly “Once Upon a Ballet” series.
These relatively short performances are perfect for very young kids (age three and up). I have seen them for the past few years and I always love watching the adorable children performing the dazzling highlights from the ballet. The vivid colors of the costumes and scenery are sure to capture toddlers’ attention and get even the most rambunctious kids to sit down and watch the performance.
From clockwork imps to a luminous owl that flies above the audience, mice dressed in polka dots and dancers dancing with huge chopsticks, this timeless re-imagined classic bursts with energy and excitement. This holiday ballet, danced to Tchaikovsky’s beloved score, is set in Art Nouveau style circa 1907 with innovative choreography by long-time NYTB choreographer, Keith Michael, set design by Gillian Bradshaw-Smith, and costumes by Metropolitan Opera’s Resident Costume Designer Sylvia Taalsohn Nolan.
