If you’ve been following along on our potty training journey (see my posts here and here), I’m delighted to announce that S is trained! I’m still in shock that this actually happened. We started this last Saturday and by this past Friday, he was trained (some people have 3 day methods, we have two years and 6 day methods). When I left off, I spoke about Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
Here’s the recap for how the rest of our week went.
Wed:
S had two accidents at school (soaked two outfits) and even soaked two pairs of shoes (he came home in wet sandals with is little feet in two plastic bags). Surprisingly, he LOVED having his feet in socks in plastic bags. At home he was fine. He decided he wanted to walk to help me get his brother and sister (NO STROLLER). It’s several blocks and he did really well.
Thursday:
A breakthrough at school – he peed and didn’t have any accidents. He came home in the same clothes and shoes that he went to school in.His wonderful teacher wrote a note that he peed at school and she was proud of him. Finally a day WITHOUT visiting the washing machine. However, even though he peed at home, he had a poop accident when we got back after camp pickup. Considering that he hadn’t had an accident in a day, that was fine.
Friday:
Came home DRY again and in same clothes. We got another note telling us he peed and pooped at school. My husband and I looked at each other and I whispered, “I think he’s trained”.
Saturday:
S was dry all day, plus we took the subway to the city and back. We went to the Children’s Museum of Manhattan and he went to the bathroom several times and peed each time. While he has told me he still doesn’t like using the bathroom, he’s having success and giving a great effort. This is so different from what he was doing the week before (remember the 8 times I took him to the potty at LEGOLAND Westchester last Saturday?).
Sunday:
Dry all day, used the bathroom at home.
Monday:
Dry at school. He had an accident today at home, after I got home from work. But he told us right afterwards and was concerned. The important thing is that he realized it. He was watching TV with his sister and didn’t listen to his body. We didn’t scold him and I quickly took his wet clothes off and cleaned him up, singing the potty song from Daniel Tiger – see the video here http://pbskids.org/video/?guid=f5438176-8839-4aaa-8b07-53209a2138f1.
I bought some books for him, one of which was Daniel Tiger’s Potty story, which I’ll discuss in another post.
I know there will be accidents, but I’m ready for them. My backpack is packed with several pairs of clothing and extra shoes, as well as ziplocs. S is aware of his body now, something that wasn’t natively happening even a week ago. And while I probably shouldn’t have sent the miralax to school to help his system on Tuesday, I think that helped him be more aware. He couldn’t ignore it and run back to the safety of a pull up. While I wish he had trained two years ago, it still happened. He’ll be going into his Special Ed K-2 Class trained next month!

Well done to S! Potty training is a stressful thing for everyone, but worth it in the end. My eldest had a massive issue with flushing the chain and used to have a meltdown every time I asked her to do it. Now she’s 5 and has normal toilet habits. She’s been dry in the daytime from about 2.5 but has only been dry at night continuously since she was 4. Unfortunately there is no definitive answer, other than every single child is different and will do things when they’re ready. Thanks for linking up to #SuperparentSaturday
Well done to both of you! Potty training can be tough but glad to hear he’s cracked it. We’ve just sorted it out with my daughter too. She has tummy problems so it has taken us over a year of being very patient. She’s all potty trained now though so all is good. #SuperParentSaturday
Well done to both of you!I hated potty training – my son did it a few days after his 3rd birthday but it was incredibly stressful.
