If you’re like me, your iPhone is attached to you pretty much all the time. I use it for everything and I let my kids play with it too (I just turn off the wifi first). That means two things; my battery runs low CONSTANTLY and I need it to be protected enough so if my 6 year old, 4 year old or 18 month old drops it, it won’t break. This is the 2nd iPhone I’ve replaced (the first one was destroyed withing 48 hours of getting it) – so I was using a huge protective case. But I recently realized I really needed something that will help me keep this battery draining device powered up too.
Enter Mophie. They make awesome battery extending cases that will give you extra power and charge your phone. I had first noticed Mophie years ago, when I was on a blogger trip in California. Adrianne from Tothinkistocreate.com had the case and showed it to me, but I didn’t have an iPhone yet. I got my iPhone at the end of November and Mophie was in the back of my mind. My current case was great, but didn’t charge my battery, so I became intrigued with the Mophie Juice Pack Plus® Outdoor Edition For iPhone 4 & 4S Battery Case ($119). They were great enough to send me a sample to test out. Now, it’s going to make your iPhone heavier, but that’s not a deal breaker to me.
What we liked about the Juice Pack Plus Outdoor Edition Battery Case ($119):
You attach the case and charge it and then the case can recharge your phone. Just flip a tiny toggle switch and see your phone charge up (without re-plugging it in). The case doubles your battery life and has an ergonomic design in a hard shell case with a protective shock-proof rubberized band.
What the case will give you battery-wise:
Talk Time: Up to 8 hours on 3G | Up to 16 hours on 2G
Internet Use: Up to 7 hours on 3G | Up to 11 hours on Wi-Fi
Audio Playback: Up to 44 hours
Video Playback: Up to 11 hours
Plus you can also turn your phone into a GPS receiver — you get access to a special mophie “outdoor edition” app allows you to turn your iPhone into a connected, dedicated GPS device that is able to power its own way through any adventure. The outdoor app allows you to access your maps anywhere, even if you don’t have cell reception. Which will be great, when we start hiking as a family (if that ever happens, again, of course). To charge your phone, you use the included micro USB cable, just plug it into your case and then plus into your iphone plug (yes, it will fit, just pull out the white cord you usually use).
What to watch for:
I wish it had come with a built in screen protector! The last case I had came with one, but it didn’t charge the battery. And it’s also heavier than you may wish.
Thumbs up or down?
Thumbs up! Last Wednesday, I went to two meeting in Manhattan (I travel in 45 minutes each way) and I barely went down in power. When I finally went down to 85%, I flipped the tiny toggle switch and it charged my iPhone right up. I see such a huge difference that I stopped walking around with my iphone charger cord and plug (I have plugged in my phone to recharge it at events and family activities).
How much and where to buy:
It retails for $119 and you can find a retailer here.
Thank you to Mophie for sending me a sample Juice Pack Plus® Outdoor Edition For iPhone 4 & 4S Battery Case.
