Mankind has always been fascinated by the moon and it seems as if every culture has its own folklore about it. The Old Man and The Old Moon is a show currently playing at the New Victory Theater and tells its own original tale of why the moon changes its shape throughout the month.
The Old Man and The Old Moon is written, produced and performed by PigPen, a theater company from Brooklyn. The critically-acclaimed group is the first group to win the NYC Fringe Festival’s top honor two years in a row. PigPen is also a band and plays indie-folk songs. In the show each performer plays at least one type of instrument, so there’s almost always music, either in the background, or as a full-length song. There is also use of shadow puppets and props to tell the story.
The story is of an old man who’s job is to fill up the moon each night with liquid light so that the moon can always be a full moon and shine constantly. When the old man’s wife leaves him and travels by ship out west he goes after her to bring her back and joins a ship. When the captain of his ship dies the old man convinces the sailors to sail out west and has all types of adventures on the way. In the meantime, while he’s away at sea, the moon begins to lose its light until the world is in complete darkness. All’s well that ends well and the moon regains its light, with a lesson both kids and adults will never forget.
My daughter and I really enjoyed the show. I’ve read to her several versions about the moon over the years and this particular version was inventive and intelligent. This production, which is 90 minutes long and is appropriate for kids ages 7 and up, is very imaginative, full of humor and definitely worth checking out!
