One of the toughest things for parents to deal with is when they have a child who is a picky eater. When my daughter was one, I would always try to buy her a variety of foods – anything just to get her to eat – and nothing helped at the time. Fast forward seven years – she is now an adventurous eater but I will never forget those difficult times. I am currently dealing with her youngest brother who is almost-two-year-old and also a picky eater , so I was really looking forward to attending a luncheon at Blue Hill restaurant with Pediatric Doctor Alan Greene, hosted by Plum Organics. It was a delicious lunch – all locally-sourced food – and I learned some great tips about dealing with picky eaters, which I’m happy to share.Tips from Dr. Alan Greene, Pediatric advisor to Plum Organics:
- Toddlers need 13 grams of protein per day. If you can’t give them this much at least aim for a couple of grams just so they get some nutrients and also to get their palates used to the taste.
- Almost everyone loves a sweet treat. Roasted veggies that get caramelized, as well as fresh fruit like raspberries, are a great snack option. When you provide a snack, make sure every bite counts.
- If your kids don’t eat balanced meals over the course of a day (or even a week) it’s okay. Just make sure that over a course of a few weeks they can balance out their nutrition.
- Properly-spaced snacks help kids eat better during meals. Grazing throughout the day is not recommended.
- The Plum Organics Mighty 4 pouch can make a great snack – it can be used a a spread or as a dip. The pouches contain 4 food groups – fruits, veggies, whole grains and protein.
- For kids who may have some vitamin deficiency, Mighty Sips is a drink coming out this fall. This is an organic, milk-based drink that has no artificial colors and flavors. It contains spinach and carrots, as well as 22 vitamins and minerals. With 7 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber it is a much healthier alternative than the leading brand.
