Do you have a child that loves to recreate epic battles with their toy soldiers? My son (age 10) loves history and can often be found creating battle scenes across the floor in our basement. And this year, he was able to align this with his 5th Grade Class’ Social Studies Curriculum. And the best part? This was his idea.
I had purchased the Safari LTD TOOBs Civil War collections for him some time ago.
Since his class is learning about the Civil War, my son decided to use his Civil War Union Soldier collection and Confederate Soldier collection and display them in a battle scene. He was not given this assignment from his teacher, yet he still wanted to create it, write a description of it and bring it to school.
He used his knowledge of the Civil War and chose a particular battle that was a perfect fit with the collections and materials that he had, which were:
- Scene-a Rama diorama display base
- Scene-a-Rama Basic Kit to create the landscape
- The Civil War Confederate Soldiers Collection 1
- Civil War Union Soldiers Collection 1
- A tent
My son chose “The Battle of Chancellorsville” when the Confederate soldiers, (led by General Lee wearing the gray uniforms) caught the blue coated Union Soldiers off guard at their camp in May 1863.
Using these figures was a great way for my son to help his classmates envision one of the many battles in the Civil War, but it was also a way for him to do something he loves and create an actual battle. I am proud of his desire to share his love of history with his peers.
Thank you to Safari LTD for sending one of the TOOBs Civil War collection used in this project, I purchased another one of the TOOBs and the Scene-A-Rama materials with my own money.As always, all opinions are my own.
