I recently had the chance to visit the Ridgewood, Queens YMCA with my daughter and we had a great time. Madeleine attended a ballet class in a beautiful new studio with nice big windows. The class was for ages 5-10 and was led by a really nice teacher who got the girls moving and dancing right away. The class was fun and while it focused on ballet technique it was not a rigid class and all of the girls regardless of dancing level seemed to have a lot of fun and got in some great exercise. The Y is not overly strict about class wardrobe and although they have a recital, it does not require a second mortgage to participate! (Read More after the jump)
All of the offerings at the Y are very reasonably priced and there is a wide range of activities. Kids can choose from athletic programs like karate, soccer and tennis or cultural fun like chess, violin and drama. All classes are between $38-110 (each 8 week session) with members getting the best price and first priority for sign-up. Becoming a member of the Y is a fantastic opportunity for the whole family to participate in everything from toddler classes to older adult wellness. There are some fantastic family programs like family yoga, basketball and the popular family Zumba where the entire family can get fit and have fun together! I love living in Queens but have found many community centers needing some updating and more space. The Ridgewood Y has beautiful facilities that were renovated in 2008 and feature lots of natural light, the most modern gym equipment and well appointed early education classrooms. Everything was extremely clean and well taken care of, I wanted to drop my daughter off at their free child care so I could go work out in the beautiful gym!
I was really impressed with the friendly community that I saw between the people attending classes but also among the staff. This is truly a community meeting place that gets everyone active and engaged and that’s a wonderful thing. I admit I am more of an indoor person and I love movies and video games, but everyone needs to get active and this an inviting and fun place to get started. I am definitely looking into signing my family up and I think you should check out their offerings online or drop in for a tour.
Thank you to the Ridgewood YMCA for letting us attend a complimentary class.
