It seems like we’re back to our weekly packed schedules. The relaxed days of summer seem to be so long ago (it was only two weeks ago). So I treasure the time we sit down for dinner as a family. I’m excited to be teaming up again with Boston Market to help promote the importance of shared meal time as a family with The Family Dinner Project. Plus, their seasonal fave Parmesan Tuscan Chicken is back!
After a hard day working in the city, my husband took the kids to meet me at the Boston Market near us.
Since I wasn’t there to help when my husband ordered with the kids, the fab staff at the Forest Hills location carried the food upstairs to help my husband.
After battling the crowds in the NYC Subway, I was happy to sit down with my brood.
Our dinner conversation was about travel. I asked these questions:
- What was your favorite family trip that we took together?
- What was the funniest thing that happened on that trip?
- Where would you like to travel to next?
We spoke about our fun trip to the Bahamas two years ago (see our trip recap here) and Negril, Jamaica the year before that (read that recap here). We spoke about where we wanted to travel to in the next few years. My daughter and older son picked Israel.
My little guy said Boston (because his older brother had been there this summer and he doesn’t know many other places). I said Mexico, because I hope to take the family to Cancun in the spring. My husband said he wanted to go to Niagara Falls. While we may never make all these trips in the next few years, it’s so wonderful to get children excited about seeing different places and experiencing other cultures.
Wondering what to talk about with your kids at dinner? “What did you do today” never really gets children to open up. At least, not with my kids.
I love these conversation starters from The Family Dinner Project.
This past August, basketball superstar Lisa Leslie is joined forces with Boston Market for a campaign called “Log Out, Look Up.” Families will be encouraged to spend less time looking at their screens, and more time looking at one another by engaging in meaningful, regular family meals together.
The Family Dinner Project is proud to be a part of Log Out, Look Up with Lisa Leslie to provide resources and support around meaningful family dinners. This opportunity empowers families to come together around the table for food, fun and conversation about things that matter.
Here’s some more ideas to promote more conversation at the dinner table:
- Open up some fun with a family dinner game like Would You Rather? Open up and share with one another! Print out some of our Conversation Cards
- Open your hearts and join in our latest #FamilyDinnerForward initiative for Esther Day 2015
