We finally pulled the trigger and decided to take our boys, 4 and 6, to Disney World. When I campaigned for the trip, I assured my darling husband that we would not schlep a giant car seat through the airport. I really hate to rent car seats because they’re expensive and often filthy. (Read More after the jump). Good thing I figured out a solution, because a family emergency required my attention and caused my incredible man to fly solo from New York to Orlando with the kids!
Safety 1st Go Hybrid Convertible Booster ($199) is a full harness car seat that folds down to about the size of a backless booster. The middle section of the seat back is flexible fabric, which is more a blessing than a curse, but does come with a bit of compromise.
The seat folds easily into its included travel bag, then adjusts to fit the child and the car. Passengers have to be at least 22 pounds to use the Go Hybrid. We set it to fit our son before we left, then quickly installed it in the rental car at the airport.
Because the back is soft, the top tether holds the stiff headrest in place. Then the LATCH clips fasten the base to the car. The straps are easy to adjust and tighten, and our son was snugly buckled in.
The flexible back makes the seat light and foldable, but it also means that the child’s body has to conform to the shape of the car’s seat. When our son fell asleep, he slumped down in the seat and his head bobbed forward, not to the side. He was securely restrained, but was not comfortable.
The Go Hybrid converts to a backless booster, but because those can be purchased for as little as $15, we bought a cheap one for our older son and left it behind. The airline would have charged us $25 to check it as baggage.
Go Hybrid is a terrific solution for families who fly with toddlers and don’t want to wrestle a full-sized car seat through the airports.
