There’s nothing better than sharing favorite songs with your kids, especially songs you can sing along to. Classic kids’ songs never go out of style and when they’re sung by the great Laurie Berkner, whom People magazine hailed as the “queen of children’s music” naturally it’s going to be a slam-dunk.
I recently received a copy of Laurie’s new album, Laurie Berkner’s Favorite Classic Kids’ Songs for review. All three of my kids, ages 3, 6 and 8, had so much fun picking out favorite tunes and singing along, and I, of course had my own selection.
Laurie’s voice is perfect for children of all ages. It’s very sweet and gentle, so it’s perfect for newborns. The familiar songs on the album will also appeal to toddlers and school-aged kids since they can sing along to their favorite tunes.
The two-disc album runs for 129 minutes and includes a whopping 57 songs! Included are six original tracks from Laurie’s previous hugely popular albums (including We are the Dinosaurs and Victor Vito). Laurie is accompanied by her band members: Susie Lampert, Brady Rymer and Bobby Golden.
What I love about the songs, other than Laurie’s pitch-perfect voice, is that she changed some of the lyrics or added her own. Some of my personal favorites: I Gave My Love a Cherry (sung with Laurie’s daughter); There’s a Hole in the Bucket (a fun performance with Rymer); Take Me Out to the Ball Game is also cool – it starts out slow and then gets a jazzy rendition. This Little Light of Mine, Amazing Grace, Little Boy Blue and Alouette are especially gorgeous. You simply can’t go wrong with the album, there’s something for everyone.
Here’s a video of one of the songs in the album, Froggy Went A Courtin’
