Contain Your Box Tops With This DIY Box Top Holder

As I mentioned in my recent post on Box Tops for Education, we are getting serious this year about collecting them. Like most other parents, I’ll be sending them into school. However, it can get kind of disorganized when you are collecting a huge bunch of them. I created this DIY Box Tops Holder to give to my oldest child’s teachers so they would have an easier time keeping them in one place.

I had picked up a bunch of Box Tops for education products at Walmart the other day.

 

We ended up buying Honey Nut Cheerios and my youngest child picked up the Multi-Grain Dark Chocolate Crunch Cheerios. And when I say picked up, I mean that it was his and he wasn’t going to share with his siblings.

DIY Box Top Holder

1. Gather the boxes you want to use. You can go big or small, just think about where it’s going to go (ie. shelf in a classroom or on a teacher’s desk).
2. Make sure there is a slot to place the Box Tops in.
3. Make sure there is a way to get the Box Tops out!
4. Make sure it will last the school year — ie. reinforce box with tape (I used duct tape, which did that).
5. If you’re making it for your child’s class, you should ask your child’s teacher before you send it into school.

To make this container I took a small Cheerios box and a Fiber One box. My idea was to kind of make it like a voting ballot with a slot on top. I planned to use the cereal box flaps as the way to get them out.

First I cut the slot in the Fiber One box. I made it way too big.

 

Then I cut out a rectangle in the back so the box tops could come into the slot and go into the second box.

 

Then I cut around the same size box in the Cheerios box.

 

Then I started putting the silver glitter duct tape on.

 

I covered up most of the hole that I cut in the top of the Fiber One box, leaving room for bigger Box Tops to get in. I added more tape after to cover the box up.

 

I started putting duct tape on the Cheerios Box.

 

I taped up as much of the boxes that I could and then glued them together (and kept taping). However, I ran out of the glitter tape and it was too late at night to go out and get more.

The next day I picked up more tape, but it was red. It actually contrasted nicely. Then I finished by project by adding some foam letters.

I wanted to spell out Box Tops. To finish I added a flower smily face foam piece.

 

I made sure the Box Tops would fit.
