Creating Really Awesome Free Things Book Review

With three kids under 8, plus holiday break, plus cold weather – I am trying to figure out how to fill in vacation time with creative activities that are easy even for very young kids and don’t require too much prep. Jamie Dorobek, creator of the popular blog CreatingReallyAwesomeFreeThings.com recently came out with a book by that same name (in short, C.R.A.F.T). The book features 100 budget-friendly crafts for kids of all ages.

Jamie is a longtime blogger who’s been doing crafts since she was young. She turned her love of crafts into a love of creating anything and everything. Unlike Jamie, I am not very creative when it comes to making crafts, which is why this book is very handy! It begins with lists of types of items to save (such as basic household supplies) and basic crafting supplies. The chapters are divided into places where the craft items typically come from (kitchen, office, bathroom, garage and nature).

The crafts themselves are easy to make with step-by-step instructions that are easy to follow. They are accompanied with a picture of the finished products, along with a picture or two of what it looks like in the process. Many crafts also come with cool trivia facts. Some of the projects are just for fun, like the masks pictured below. Some projects are actually useful, like the bird feeder, plant markers and the desk organizer. All of them are sure to keep your kids occupied and using their imagination, whether in the kitchen, garage or outdoors.
